How Long Does it Take to Get ID?

If you have all the papers you need, you should be able to get an ID quickly.

If you don’t have all the papers you need, it can take weeks or even months to get some of the papers.

If you have trouble getting these papers, you will have to show the SOS what you did to try and get the papers. The Record of Effort form can help you keep track of what you did.  If you have to write letters to ask someone to send you a paper (such as a birth certificate or school record), be sure to keep a copy of your letters and any responses.

You may not need a State ID card to get a job or some kinds of help from the Michigan Department of Human Services.
