What Documents Does the SOS Require?
Document Actions
The Secretary of State (SOS) requires proof of four factors:
- Identity (who they are)
- That they are a U.S. Citizen or here legally
- That they live in Michigan
- That they have a social security number or are not eligible for one
The Secretary of State publishes a list of what documents it accepts. It is a good reference tool. You can find it here. Your client must provide original documents or government certified documents (such as a court record or birth certificate).
You should help your clients get the types of proof that are on this list, if you can. Your clients will get an ID faster if they have the documents that the SOS wants to see.
Your client may have problems getting some of these documents. This website tells you about some other kinds of documents your client may be able to use to prove each of these four factors.
