Getting an ID for a Child Under 18
It is a very good idea for a parent or guardian to obtain an ID card for a child under 18, even if the child is not going to be needing a driver’s license. In that way, if the child loses the ID after they leave home, it is easier to get a replacement ID than to get a new one.
A parent or guardian can get an ID card for a child in their care. They must prove the same things for a child as adults have to prove for themselves. Follow the links in the bos to the left for more information. This includes
- Proof the child has a social security number or a letter showing the child is ineligible for a social security number.
- Proof of Identity
- Proof Citizenship or Legal Presence as an immigrant
- Residency
The parent or guardian may use proof of where they (the parent or guardian) lives in order to prove where the child lives (residency). The parent or guardian must first prove their relationship to the child. This can be done through a birth certificate or adoption order or guardianship order.
